on the manly arts

Category: musing,randomnesspimento @ 10:09 pm

So, I read something recently (a couple of hours ago) on shaving and why we’re all going it wrong.

Despite the title up there, that includes you ladies. We all know that men invented the reasons behind ladies shaving their legs anyway… we’re all bastards apparently, but we’re happy to be so.

Anyway, it got me to thinking. (Gasp! Shock! Yes, the sudden electrical impulses through my brain were painful at first, but after a while I kinda enjoyed them…) I’m a lazy shaver, I’ve never even bothered to attempt to try giving shaving with a razer that’s not electric a go. (In fact, the only time I’ve been exposed to a manual razor is when my head was shaved, but that’s another story…) This is mostly due to laziness, when I was in uni I’d shave once a week, tops. Once I didn’t shave for 6 weeks due to more laziness and being overseas for four weeks. When I got back to uni, I was dubbed alternately Neckbeard the Pirate (my stubble came in from the bottom up) and the Biblical Carpenter (I was learning how to build theatrical sets and such). I still usually only shave the night (I still night shower…) before appearing in public to this day, so attaining the smooth shave has never been a concern of mine. Even still, reading that article makes me want to give it a go. I believe this is because I’m a sucker for both proper old schoolism, and doing things the fundementally ‘correct’ way. By ‘correct’ I mean ‘the way that I believe it should be done, the way that you prefer is flawed in so many ways I’m not even going to begin to try to attempt to correct you’. My way is just better, you’d do well to just accept that.

I’m not really sure why I brought this up, mayhaps later one I’ll actually obtain the required goods for this method of shaving and let you know how I go. I imagine I will. One day..

On another note, you’ll notice I use a lot of brackets. This is because it’s how I think. Screw proper grammar, my way is better….

Hah, this is why I shave in the shower. Also Lush makes a really good shaving cream for thick stubble. It’s pretty expensive and not really for anyone in too much of a rush – you’re supposed to leave it on for about 5 minutes after washing your face with warm water. It works really well though – Rob can back me up on that.

I was shaving right the entire time.

This should be about how you were doing it wrong Ross.

Who said anything about right/wrong? This is merely tops vs lazy, tops vs disposible junkism. The only right/wrong is my perception vs your perception, which has nothing to do with shaving…

I’m so glad that someone else has benefited from that article too. I found it after a Google search for “alternatives to gillette razors” because I felt like such a dunce buying exorbitantly-priced cartridges for my 11-year-old-boy’s-design-sensibility razor. So that article pretty much summed up how I felt and introduced me to a better way. I am planning on giving it a go too; we can compare notes. :D

I dunno what this magical ‘correct’ way to shave is for you boys, but the Gillette Venus ads on the telly would have us girls believe that the ‘correct’ way to shave your legs has nothing to do with technique, and everything to do with owning a perfect tan and prancing around to a doctored Bananarama soundtrack.

    Misogynists.

And here I thought you lot enjoyed it far more than we do….

Dream on my friend, dream on…
